Home // Insights & Events // New Visa Route For Indian Young Professionals
Following discussions at the recent G20 meeting, the UK and India have now confirmed implementation of the previously announced migration agreement to issue up to 3,000 visas for young professionals each year. These visas will be temporary in nature and last a maximum of two years.
This route builds on the existing youth mobility visa but unlike that scheme, it is restricted to graduates only. Although full details are yet to be released, it is expected that eligible applicants will be selected via ballot. It is expected that the ballot will be significantly oversubscribed.
The introduction of the young professional visas opens a new avenue for entry to the UK for Indian nationals. Where an applicant is successful in the ballot, it will provide a substantial cost saving in comparison to some immigration categories.
However, given the relatively low numbers available each year, combined with the lack of certainty of a ballot system, this scheme will provide only limited opportunities for organisations wishing to rely on these visas.
It is therefore important that organisations seeking to bring Indian nationals to the UK understand the various immigration options available as this will enable long term planning, cost efficiencies and time savings in their immigration programme.
Greenwoods has a dedicated immigration team, led by Matt Lynch, which is on hand to assist. Additionally, with the increase in foreign investment in the UK generally, Greenwoods is supporting and advising individuals and companies entering the UK market across the spectrum of its practice areas, always with a focus on a client’s objectives. You can read more about it here.
Russell Strong, Disputes Partner and Head of International, with the support of Eleni Nicolaou, are responsible for the firm’s international development and growth. As part of that function, they are looking to discuss how Greenwoods can collaborate with international firms to build a mutually beneficial relationship.
