Spotlight on Roger Harding – get to know our Head of Tax & Trusts

I can’t, hand on heart, say I chose a career in tax. Rather, it chose me. I did a one-month summer placement in the Cardiff tax office and was hooked from there. Listening to the calls coming in and officers dealing with queries intrigued me. (yes, in the early 1980’s the Inland Revenue, as they were known, were more efficient than they appear to be today. At least the telephone was always answered).

Since those days, I’ve been in practice almost thirty years. My particular expertise has always been in Private Wealth matters but I also get very involved in company and business taxes, as there is often an overlap. This is usually because successful business people will have complex personal tax lives as well. I really enjoy the interaction with clients when discussing their plans to pass wealth to future generations. To some clients the problems of keeping their family happy through tax planning arrangements can seem insurmountable, but when you provide the solution and demonstrate the potential tax saved, it’s quite a buzz.

I am particularly pleased to be working alongside the great Wealth Preservation team here at Greenwoods. There is a wide breadth of expertise and experience in the team and great working environment. Working in tax means I frequently work alongside other fantastic colleagues in the Real Estate, Employment, Disputes and Corporate teams. It’s great to be involved and demonstrate to clients that as a firm, we can deal with the majority of their

issues.

Outside of work my one true addiction is golf. I love all sport but there are not many I can actively pursue competitively any longer. However, with three young grandchildren, time is limited so I don’t play as much as I’d like!
